This album feature some of the most profound and spiritually meaningful works that I encountered among the piano music written in the last thirty years. As an interpreter I came to feel a strong personal connection with each of these works, despite their striking diversity of compositional language and style – a typical trait of our time. Ellen Harrison’s enchanting suite The Time Between, (2020) conveys a wide array of subtle emotions with incredible timbral and psychological sophistication; with an almost cinematic feel, its titles synesthetically evoke color nuances and ephemeral feelings of distance, longing and melancholia. Jonathan Cziner’s Elegy (2014) is an impressively concise two-page work, miraculously growing form a transparent an innermost lamentation into a solemn, bell-like conclusion, universal in scope. Thomas Schwan’s Notturno (2025), at the heart of this album, asserts a cosmic comprehension of soulful suffering, faith, fragility, passion, tragedy, contemplation, and commotion. On Deeper Reflection by Edward Green (2024) is a hauntingly beautiful miniature, rigorous in its contrapuntal writing, and imbued with deep philosophical meaning. The disc’s grand finale is Ralf Gawlick’s Mysterium doloris quintae (Tropen-Kreuz) (1997), a timeless and heartfelt representation of existence as a realm of universally shared suffering, where mercy and grace feebly but powerfully find their way, providing salvation and comfort in the face of evil.
